Hello my dusty friends. I hope you have had fun recently making shavings, and that you are able to do a bit more now it is warm enough to get into the workshop.
Flaming June! I nearly married June. Lovely girl. Saw her last week for the first time in 40 years.
I am saying nothing more…
Times are still awkward, and the invisible enemy is still out there ready to pounce. As a friend of mine would have it – “Just because we are allowed out it doesn’t mean it is over – just that there is more room for you all in hospital.”
Please be careful whatever you do – then we can all last a bit longer. I have lost three very good friends this month – and it doesn’t get any easier.
We still cannot get together at the club, but that is no excuse to go rusty. We can still get into the workshop, so we can still practice. As well as that there is currently a thriving on-line woodturning community that seems to be growing by the day. While it is not possible to stand together in a club workshop and share ideas, we can certainly do exactly that in a virtual workshop, and I think we should.
KVWT Monthly meeting changes - June
We discussed this last month – the membership of the club is generally of an age where we do not want to sit together, should to shoulder for 3 hours. Quite simply it is foolish. What we need to do is to get together somehow in pairs or threes and share ideas locally, or alternatively remotely using technology. Our next meeting would have been 9th June – however this has changed to an online meeting, and the date has moved slightly. We will now meet on Wednesday 17th June instead of the 9th. The reason for this change is so that we can welcome an online demo from a very experienced American turner Jeff Hornung. Jeff runs the Walnut Log in Missouri in America. I have seen a couple of Jeff’s demonstrations and I am sure it is going to be fun. This is included in your membership fee – and it really is very easy to join and watch on Zoom on a PC or Tablet or Smart-phone. Please let me know if you want to join in and watch, and I will add you to the list. I really recommend this to you.
KVWT July meeting – Emma Cook The Tiny Turner.
Tuesday July 14th is our normal meeting day and we welcome Emma Cook AKA The Tiny Turner to entertain and educate us. Emma really is a class act and the topic she has agreed for us is one she presents with a great deal of enthusiasm and knowledge. I saw this demo 2 months ago and as a result of seeing it I have specifically chosen it as her first demo to us. Again – this will be online. If you have never seen a demo online this will be a great one to start off with.
Woodturning360.com
A new club has been formed which is worth mentioning, I am not sure if it is a first – or whether it is simply unusual. https://www.woodturning360.com/ Is an online club with only online meetings. Each month there will be a demonstration from some of the UK and Europe’s best woodturners, and each month there will also be a forum for members to ask questions or suggest what they want to see. It does not want to, nor can it, replace physical clubs. What is can do however is bring together wood turners from all over the world to meet each other despite the distance and time zones, share ideas and hopefully broaden their horizon.
I have seen KVWT club members pop up online from time to time and it is good to see them. The more we see that the better as far as I am concerned.
I am rather hoping that you, dear reader, will join us (KVWT) for a Q&A session in the next week or so. We had a session in May and I was pleased to see how it turned out (no pun intended) as we had a very interesting chat to people online answering all manner of questions. I will confirm the date in the next couple of days. I suspect I will be aiming for Thursday 11th June, but I need to see who else I can talk into joining me to offer sage advice to the people who ask questions.
In closing, what has been happening? I have been a busy boy – back at work, if you can call it that – just 2 days per week working at Hampshire Sheen HQ in Four Marks. The weather has been wonderful which means I have been able to commute to and from work on the motorbike, which is particularly handy as I have been able to practice for my advanced riding training which has now started. Apart from that it is pretty much doing whatever is needed at home, reading and messing around on the TV.
My son has joined the band of authors with his wife Stephanie and my other daughter in law Hannah as illustrator and published a childrens book aimed at helping to educate youngsters about the invisible menace “Covid-19”. It is centred on their dog Presley and his real life pal Bella. The money raised from the book is going to the NHS workers charity. It is a bit of a giggle because both of these lovely little dogs really exist!! www.theadventuresofpresleyandbella.com
Here is a picture of Presley getting ready to sign a few hardback copies!!
Anyhooooo That is all for now, please remember these dates and let me know if you would like to join in.
