I write occasional daft emails to fellow members of my woodturning club.  As we get new members, some of them are stupid enough to ask me for some of the older emails.  As time passes and the read them, they will learn never to ask again - but meanwhile I have to dig into my email archives and find old items and then send them one by one to the unlucky recipients.

You would think they would find more useful things to do with their lives than read the sad wittering's of this old fool and try to make something of their lives - but no!  Any that appear here will do so in reverse order, there are many reasons for this, but logic is the main driver.  If there is one thing I have - it is logic.  Not much else to be fair - but I do have logic.

I have only recently worked out how to put the pictures in, so many are still missing.  I will continue to work on it.

What is a man to do?

If there is no snow – and a motorbike in the drive - it has to be used.

As long as the roads are decent and there is every reason to believe I can keep the shiny side up – I have been out riding.

I had turned nothing since Christmas, and I said to someone the other that I had lost my wood-turning mojo – but thanks to Les Thorne – I have it back again – despite the fact I need some serious practice and some much better habits.

As well as this there have been distractions of other sorts – enrolling in a charity bike ride which will travel the whole of the UK, not tidying up my garage, tidying up someone else’s workshop instead, going to Wales, and watching Rugby (big game tomorrow whereupon Martin Evans will be crying into a glass of expensive claret once again as the English Rugby team continue to reign supreme over the 6 Nations championship by rubbing the welsh noses into their very own welsh mud – I can hardly wait.)

I shall keep this short as I want to send this before tomorrow…

Les wants a Virgin

I went to have a day with Les Thorne on Thursday and had great time and learned a lot – it is something I heartily recommend. I also learned why he insists on making sure you wear proper personal protective equipment as I was hollowing out a vase when it caught, split, and missed me by a whisper. Properly dressed though – I was quite safe.

I will bring the broken item on Saturday so you can have a giggle.

Les is better with his hands than with his brain – he told me that lost count of the number of times he failed his maths O-level.

I should add very quickly (because the clock is ticking) that Les has a place on his beginners day on Friday 1st March. This would be £100 for the day and it will be money well spent. So beginners only need apply – Les can be reached at Upton Park Farm, Alresford SO24 9EB - Phone: 01962 732223, or 07788 627 205 Get in quick as he is probably the best wood-turning teacher in the country. He also tells jokes – luckily you don’t pay for the jokes otherwise you would want your money back! 😊

Les is with us in May – so he has time to learn a new joke. I did send him one about a song title – lets see if he likes it.

I was watching TV and the announcer said there was a program about the clitoris on the red button but I couldn't find it.

Completion and publication of the program and cards for next year – they are going to print.

Sheila has our cards and I am hoping they will be ready for the Tuesday members evening – we have a full program this year – and we are already thinking about next year. Also, at last weeks committee meeting we were already talking about up to 5 events this year.

For Sale now Agreed

If you were at the AGM you will know that I was aiming to get a date for an open day to view the items for sale in the workshop I spoke about. The pictures I showed are available to view on this website https://www.philboulter.com/new-for-sale and there is a guide price document as well, it is attached to this email as a .pdf document. The items are for sale on March 1st – it is a Sunday – from 2.30pm to 5pm. People can buy the smaller items on the day, the larger items where we have more than one person interested will go to ballot for the price indicated. Please email me if you are interested in anything. I am expecting to sell the chisels and smaller items on the day – so bring money. I will give the final address nearer the time on a separate email – but it is in Culver Road, Newbury – not far from the Rugby Club. Again- I will give full details and a postcode nearer the time. (Linda has her family staying for a couple of weeks as their house is undergoing building work, hence the delay) I already have a not of interest is quite a few items as the prices are keen.

Next Meeting – Tuesday 12th March

Our next Tuesday event is on 12th March when we welcome a new demonstrator called John Plater. I am looking forward to this, not only because John is new to us – but having spoken to him I think he will be a good shout. Obviously I checked him out on the interbookwebwide thingy. I found these pictures – I am sure one of them must be John.

Unless it is sold – John may bring what I believe to be one of the most evocative pieces I have ever seen – see below. I think it is innovative – very thought provoking and startlingly original. Have a look at it, and others, here.

A good AGM – let’s check out a new lathe

At a very well attended AGM we discussed possibly getting a new lathe for the club. I went to view one today – but am looking for more discount before buying it as I think it is not priced at a tempting enough price. Watch this space. If we do get a new one then we will be looking to sell the Jet lathe it will be replacing, this wold be a fantastic starter lathe for someone – let me know if you are interested – we will be selling it complete with its box of bits – which includes the chuck.

Saturday Workshop

We have Pot Pourri as a subject – I have some lids. As I type this – the workshop is tomorrow morning, and wickets are falling in the ODI against the West Indies. I must get up early and find some wood in the garage. Young Derek Prout (Young?) will not be there tomorrow as he is going to the palace to get his knighthood, however he has said people can call him on 07747 657764 or email derekprout53@gmail.com if you need your tools sharpened – or learn how to do it. Which

Maintenance Day

We do need to discuss this tomorrow – and get some items looked at. Watch this space.
